League Secretary's Report 4th April 2010

Loughborough Student ladies completed their season with a whitewash of Longslade in division 1 and remain in top position. However they must rely on a slip up by South Leicestershire if they are to retain their title.

In the top Mens division Loughborough Town remain ahead of their neighbouring Students with a maximum from brothers James and Simon White. In division 2 Leicester University’s status looks in jeopardy after defeat by Town pushed them into a relegation spot. Town finished strongly in division 3A with back to back victories, including one against champions, Central. An incredibly close finish in division 3b saw Loughborough Students thirds finish in the relegation spot after a series of 5-4 results narrowly went against them; Loughborough fourth team thus surviving by one rubber. Glen finish runners up in division 4A and Hoton improve to finish mid-table in division 5A.

In Mixed division 1 Longslade, although finishing in the relegation spot, enjoyed a consolation win against Town thanks largely to Jane Cleaver and Keith Spray returning a maximum. South thirds cannot be caught now in division 3A. The division 4A title went to Glen after the narrowest of victories over Quorn. Jo Woodward and Jason Tuckwood scored a maximum for Quorn but Sue O’Brien and Ian Hampshire won a decisive rubber 22-20 in the third game to clinch Glen’s win. In division 4B Leicester University take the title after a late run of wins by Mundella fell just short.

In the Hall league division 3 champions Glen finished off with a resounding win over Wanlip seconds.

League Secretary's Report 26th March 2010

Regal Arts are the new Leicestershire top flight Men’s champions after victory over their closest rivals. Successive maximums from arguably the league’s strongest pairing of Steve Higgins and Andy Frye, helped to defeat both Loughborough Leys and last season’s winners, Loughborough Students. South finish as runners up in division 3A and a late fight back by Loughborough Students thirds in division 3B may save them from relegation. A three way fight in division 4B will be decided when Wyggeston entertain Leicester University. Countesthorpe and Millenium are runners up in divisions 5A and 5B respectively after good runs of form.

With Central already relegated, Melton host Loughborough Town in the final Mixed division 2 relegation battle. A fine season from newly promoted Wyggeston sees them fall just short of successive promotions as they fell to a narrow defeat at Enderby in division 3A, despite a maximum from Amanda Ames and Matt Brooks. South should now take the title. Glen’s visit to Quorn looks likely to decide the outcome of division 4A with both sides neck and neck at the top. Leicester University are now favourites for the division 4B title.

In the ladies top division South keep their hopes alive after a maximum from Cath Cowen and Sarah Gamble sank Loughborough Town. A case of what might have been for Melton in division 2 as they thrashed league winners Longslade to finish in the runners up spot. Despite a rather shaky finish to the season South take the division 3 title.

League Secretary's Report 19th March 2010

Longslade ladies finally wrapped up the division 2 title, but only just as bottom club, Central, gave them a scare. Jan Thomson and Cathy Buckler remained undefeated however to clinch the match for the visitors. Melton now look to have beaten the Students to second spot. In division 3 South remain on course for the title after trouncing Lakeside.

In the Mens top flight Loughborough Students second team’s consecutive defeats condemns them to relegation. Melton take second spot in division 2 after Paul Gough and Matt Clough’s maximum helped to sink South. Central’s undefeated season continued against Loughborough Town and gave them the division 3A title. In division 3B Leys finished their triumphant season with a home win against Central seconds. In division 4A Ashby celebrated by beating rivals Glen in the race for honours. Lakeside march on as winners of division 5A and Enderby finish in style as winners of division 5B.

Loughborough Students end their victorious Mixed season in division 1 in fine form with a crushing win over bottom team Longslade. South pipped Leys to the division 2 title after their win at Central and also held on to top spot in division 3A. Wyggeston’s latest win keeps them in contention. Melton’s second team take division 3B with a game to spare. In division 4A Glen and Quorn are in for a close finish. A late run by Countesthorpe leaves them just short of honours.

Enderby’s unbeaten run in Hall league 2 left Quorn in the relegation spot.

League Secretary's Report 12th March 2010

Loughborough Student ladies are now firm favourites to retain their division 1 title after a whitewash at Loughborough Town. Leys now move into second spot after beating bottom side Longslade. In division 2, however, Longslade seconds head the table and should maintain the club’s interest in the top flight next season. In division 3 Leicester University upset leaders Loughborough Town in one of the highest scoring matches of the season.

In division 2 of the Men’s league Leicester University consolidated their mid table position by edging Melton. Andrew Peden and Wallace Cheng providing a maximum three rubbers. In division 4B Leys completed their campaign at the head of the table but must await the results of teams below before celebrating.

South’s victory at Central gives them the division 2 Mixed title, meaning the club will almost certainly have two teams in the top flight next season. In division 3A Wyggeston continued their successful campaign with Helene Maginness and Ash Parmar providing three rubbers to edge Melton. Leicester University’s brace of wins should see them finish as runners up in division 3B to Melton’s seconds. In division 4A Quorn remain hot on the heels of leaders Glen by winning at Huncote thanks largely to Jo Woodward and Jason Tuckwood’s maximum. Central’s good run of form almost upset Leicester University’s chances in division 4B, but Emily Barnes and Ian Wilkinson remained unbeaten for the home side.

League Secretary's Report 5th March 2010

Regal Arts maintain top spot in Mens division 1 after a closely fought win over Leys. Central’s win over Leys thirds puts them in touching distance of the division 3A title. In division 3B Olympic drew away from the bottom of the table thanks to a Paresh Raja and Urmesh Patel maximum against Regal seconds. In division 4A Glen keep up the pressure on leaders Ashby by convincingly beating Loughborough Tech. Enderby’s latest series of wins gives them the division 5B title.

In the Mixed top flight Kerry Riley and Mark King’s maximum for Loughborough Town was not enough to prevent South from stealing the spoils. Leys came away from Longslade with an important win at the foot of the table. In division 2 South remain in the hunt for honours with Cath Cowen and Mark Cooper returning a maximum at Longslade.  South and Leys stay in contention in division 3A, whilst Central’s win at Lakeside leaves the home side firmly rooted to the bottom of the table. In division 4A Countesthorpe move into second spot.

In the Hall league Central thirds finish their season securing second place.

League Secretary's Report 26th February 2010

Loughborough Students move back to the top of Ladies division 1after Sam Andrews and Alison Pulford’s maximum against Leys. In turn Leys notched an important win against Loughborough Town with Jill Stanley and Chelsey White in dominant form. In division 2 the Student’s seconds climb above Mundella after winning away, thanks largely to Steph Brew and Amy Ainsworth recording a maximum. In division 3 Loughborough Town’s recent victories set them up for a deciding clash against South Leicestershire.

In Mens division 1 Town retain an interest at the top after a useful win at Leys. Leicester University improved their chances of retaining their division 2 status with Wallace Cheng and Andrew Peden supplying a maximum in their defeat of Town’s seconds. In division 3A Central continue their unbeaten run, whilst in division 3B Leys seconds take the title after winning a close match against the Students third squad. Ashby improved their chances of winning division 4A as Glen slipped to defeat at Loughborough. Zen retain second place in division 5A behind leaders Lakeside.

In Mixed division 1Longslade remain without a win as Town hold on to second place. Similarly in division 2 Central suffered a further defeat at Leys, who themselves battle with South for the title. In division 3A last year’s newcomers, Wyggeston, continue their excellent season with a win over South. Helene Maginness and Raj Rahul proving to be one of this season’s top mixed pairings. In division 3b Leicester University retain an outside chance of the title with victory at battling Lakeside. Countesthorpe surprised an unbeaten Quorn side in division 4A in the week’s closest match – 1 point being the difference in the home side’s win. Glen’s latest victory keeps them at the head of the table. Birstall almost repeated the feat in division 4B; Karen Hill and Ken Sewell’s maximum not quite enough to beat leaders Leicester University.

In the hall league Central finished off a respectable campaign in division 1 with a draw against Loughborough and Central’s seconds edged out Quorn in division 2.

League Secretary's Report 19th February 2010

Loughborough Students retained their Mixed division 1 title after beating Leys, with Sam Andrews and Grant Weir dominating the match. Leys seconds and South continue to fight for top spot in division 2, although Longslade seconds close the gap after victory at home to Melton. Natalie Howes and Maurice Roberts returned a maximum for the home side. Division 3a is set for a close finish, now involving four teams, as Enderby move up the table after back to back wins.  Melton seconds were involved in this week’s closest match which included a maximum from Margaret Roskell and Rob Cunniffe in their win at Lakeside in division 3b. Quorn remain unbeaten in division 4a thanks largely to Jo Woodward and Jason Tuckwood scoring a maximum  as they edged Wanlip.

Longslade’s Mens team will be returning to the league’s top flight next season after their win against Leicester University clinched the division 2 title. Wyggeston’s double over Mundella keeps them in contention in division 4b, whilst Glencote improved their position. In division 5a Lakeside are within striking distance of the title after their latest win at Hoton; Steve Dovey and Gary Rennocks scoring a maximum for the visitors. In division 5b Harborough pulled off a fine win at home to Millenium.

Longslade seconds remain on course for the Ladies division 2 title after their latest win against Mundella. Melton retain an outside chance after a fine win at Loughborough Students.

In the Hall league Central are finishing the season on a high note in division 1, whilst champions Enderby finish off their campaign in style in division 2.

League Secretary's Report 12th February 2010

Regal Arts return to the top of Mens division 1 after a hard fought win at Loughborough Town. A win in next week’s match against Loughborough Students will surely see them take the title. South move up to second spot in division 2 after two convincing away wins. Their second string also hold second spot in division 3A. In division 3B Regal’s  Sachin Hirani and Pritesh Radia were in fine form as they edged a win over Loughborough Town.  In the closest of contests Central subsequently defeated Regal with Hari Riyat and Tahir Mahmood excelling for the home side. Ashby and Glen Magna continue to vie for the division 4A title whilst Glencote climb the table in 4B.

Longslade seconds edge closer to the division 2 ladies title with a win at Loughborough Students. Jan Thomson and Cathy Buckler took a maximum 3 rubbers for the visitors. South Leicestershire now lead division 3.

South move into second place in Mixed division 1 after beating Leys, in spite of a maximum from visitors Chelsey White and Andrew Clanchy.  South’s second win leaves Longslade rooted to the foot of the table. Hard to pick a winner in division 3A as four teams remain in contention. South improved their chances with an emphatic win at Melton. In division 4A Glen prepare for a showdown with Quorn with a brace of impressive wins.

Well done to Enderby who comfortably take the Hall division 2 title. In division 3 Central move into second place.

League Secretary's Report 5th February 2010

Congratulations to Longslade who win division 1 of the Hall league, thus retaining their title. Enderby look set for a return to the top division after a convincing win in division 2.

South Leicestershire ladies improved their chance of winning division 1 as the teams around them beat each other. Second placed Loughborough Town were beaten at home by Longslade who themselves then lost to Leys. Leys however couldn’t sustain the pace in their home match against the Loughborough Students, with Alison Pulford and Sam Andrews leading the visitors to victory. In division 2 Longslade seconds continued their unbeaten run. Countesthorpe notched their first win of the season in division 3, after a Sue Howitt and Alex Pitman maximum helped them edge Leicester University.

Loughborough Students take poll position in Mens division 1 after a convincing win at Leys and now await a showdown against Regal Arts. Longslade’s win at Loughborough Town in division 2 virtually ensures their return to the top flight. Central remain unbeaten in division 3A, whilst Leys win over Regal seconds strengthens their lead in division 3B. Dave Tilley and Ashley Bolstridge returned a maximum for Leys in a tight match. Quorn maintain a challenge for the division 4A title as a Jason Tuckwood and Steve Lambley maximum edged Wanlip in the closest match of the week. In division 4b Leicester University lost their grip on the title after successive away defeats. Leys fourth team now take top spot. Lakeside remain unbeaten in division 5A, as do Enderby in division 5B.

A strong Loughborough Student team are on track for retaining their Mixed division 1 title after trouncing Leys. In division 2 Central’s hope of a first win were foiled by a Carol Harding and Zhi Yin Yang maximum for Loughborough Town. In division 4B Mundella’s win at Central puts them in contention for the title, thanks to a Janet Smith and Richard Lyons maximum.

League Secretary's Report 29th January 2010

Loughborough Town’s victory over neighbours Leys retains their outside chance of the Mixed division 1 title. South notched their first win after a fine win at Longslade. In division 2 Loughborough Leys held their nerve to clinch two consecutive 5-4 wins ending South’s unbeaten run.  South returned more points than Leys in their clash, but the home side’s Jill Stanley and Richard Grant took a maximum three rubbers. Wyggeston stay in the title race for division 3A after another maximum from one of this season’s most consistent pairs, Helene Maginess and Raj Rahul, in their win at Melton. Melton’s second string pairing of Lynne Hume and Nigel Lewis scored a maximum in their fine win at Ashby, consolidating their position as leaders of division 3b. Zen now lead division 4b after trouncing Wanlip’s seconds.

In Mens division 3A Central extended their lead over their nearest rivals with a convincing win over Melton. South move into second spot after back to back wins and Loughborough Town improve their position after a maximum from Ko Leong and Richard Song saw off a brave challenge from Leys. In division 4A both Quorn and Glen move closer to leaders Ashby. A maximum from Glen’s Girish Tailor and Chris Jones proved vital in their win at Loughborough Tech. Lakeside continue to dominate division 5A, whilst Birstall now lead division 5b after Pete Matthews and Bill Mee were undefeated in their narrow win at Central.

In Ladies division 3 both Loughborough Town and South Leicestershire remain unbeaten.   The clash between the two will determine where the honours go.

In the Hall league Quorn achieved a much needed win to lift them from the bottom of division 2.

League Secretary's Report 22nd January 2010

The badminton league is back in full swing after a short break and Longslade Men edge nearer to the top flight with a fine away win in division 2 at South Leicestershire. In division 3b Leys remain favourites for promotion after defeating neighbours Loughborough Town. In division 5a title challengers Zen came unstuck at Hoton despite Jed Smith and Carl Herbert scoring a maximum for the visitors.

In the Mixed leagues Leys seconds now lead division 2 after completing the double over Melton. Leys thirds also have top spot after their convincing win at Enderby. Although Quorn lead division 4A, Glen and Countesthorpe are now closing in. Sue Howitt and Steve Warner scored a maximum for Countesthorpe in their win at Wanlip. In division 4b Zen edged Birstall at home 5 -4, where the visitors Karen Hill and Ken Sewell were unbeaten.  Zen’s title challenge however disappeared as they lost at Mundella , who themselves now present a challenge to leaders Leicester University.

No doubt as to whom the driving force is in the top Ladies division as South dominated Longslade. Melton move into second spot in division 2 after an emphatic win over Mundella. Central almost snatched their first win of the season, but Leys Carole Spencer and Sally Turner proved too strong.

In the Hall league only a unlikely series of results can now prevent Longslade from retaining their division 1 title. Enderby remain favourites for the division 2 title.

League Secretary's Report 27th December 2009

Last season’s Ladies champions, Loughborough Students, suffered a rare defeat as South Leicestershire took top spot in division 1. The heart of South’s win was a maximum from Tracy Robbins and Holly Mee. South then consolidated their position with an emphatic away win at title contenders Loughborough Town.

Not to be outdone by their Ladies South’s Men inflicted a first defeat against Longslade’s top side in Mens division 2. South also edged out Loughborough Town with Mark Cooper and John Siddons remaining undefeated. Loughborough Tech climb the table in division 4A following a maximum from Manuf and Imran Dewan against Town. In division 5A its six out of six for leaders Lakeside as a Steve Dovey and Gary Rennocks maximum saw off a challenge from Croakers.

To complete an excellent week for the club, South’s Mixed seconds topped division 2 with a decisive win over Loughborough Town. Longslade seconds secured an important win against Leys as both sides try to retain their division 2 status.

In Hall division 1 Longslade are one win away from retaining their title and in division 2 Lakeside closed in on leaders Enderby.

League Secretary's Report 18th December 2009

Loughborough Leys go top of Mixed division 3A after victories over their nearest rivals. Leys best result came at Longslade where, despite a maximum from home pair Cathy Buckler and Dave Watts, Leys edged a 5-4 win. In the adjacent division 3b Ashby and Melton look set for a show down as both recorded significant wins. Ashby pair Sue Gilliatt and Antony Cripwell had a fine maximum return in their match against a strong University side. Quorn look clear favourites for promotion in division 4A and are unbeaten so far. Similarly Leicester University dominate division 4b.

In Mens division 4b Leicester University extended their lead at the top, despite Mundella’s spirited attempt to stop them.  University’s Jonny Bowler and Matt Campsal won the decisive rubber 23-21. In the battle at the top of division 5A honours went to Lakeside, who seemingly must win the return at Zen to take the title. Hoton climb above Welland after a maximum from Kevin Whittingham and Graham Tomkins.

In the Ladies division 2 Central were on the receiving end as two title contenders, Melton and Loughborough Students inflicted heavy defeats.

In the Hall league division 3 Glen look as if they will lay claim to an early title after six straight wins.

League Secretary's Report 11th December 2009

Loughborough Town consolidated their second place position in Mixed division 1 with a useful away victory over Leys. Wyggeston climb the table in division 3A after yet another maximum from Helene Maginness and Raj Rahul. Croakers occupy second place in division 4A after a convincing win over Birstall seconds. Birstall then bounced back with an away victory at Wanlip - Karen Hill and Pete Matthews scoring a maximum for the visitors.

League Secretary's Report 6th December 2009

Regal Arts move into second spot in Mens Division 1 after three consecutive 5-4 victories. Andy Frye, with three different partners, remained unbeaten for Regal and they now look title favourites.  In division 2 Longslade are on course for a return to the top flight after an away win at Leicester University. Not to be outdone by their first team Regal seconds also won three in a row to head division 3b, Sachin Hirani and Pritesh Radia remaining undefeated throughout. Ashby also notched three in a row to lead division 4A. Zen are challenging leaders Lakeside in division 5A and Birstall move into second place in division 5b.

Melton’s thirds almost got off the mark in Mixed division 3A but Debbie Merry and Rob Saddington landed a maximum to snatch victory for Enderby. Quorn trounced Lakeside seconds to take command of division 4A and Mundella close in on leaders Leicester University seconds in division 4b.

Three points separated winners Mundella from Melton in the only Ladies match this week.  Carmen Ng and Clare Turner helped the home side into second spot in division 2.

In the Hall League Longslade dominate division 1 and Central thirds move up the table in division 3.

League Secretary's Report 27th November 2009

Glen Magna are the new leaders of Mens division 4A. A Girish Tailor and Ian Hampshire maximum was enough to give them a slender win over second placed Ashby. In Mens Division 3A David Wilkins and Tze Yang Hin scored a maximum for Loughborough Town, but Leys held on to win 5-4. In Division 5A Hoton outscored Mundella seconds on points but finished with a 5-4 reverse, in a match where no pair could dominate.

Loughborough Town ladies take over as leaders of Division 1 after the narrowest of victories over Leys. Jill Stanley and Chelsey White were unbeaten for the visitors but Town held on to a 5-4 win.

In Mixed Division 2 Loughborough seconds move up the table. Annette East and Joy Abedin scored a maximum to edge out Central. In Division 4A Croakers inflicted a heavy defeat upon Lakeside seconds and in the adjacent Division 4b Leicester University comfortably beat nearest challengers, Zen.

Mixed fortunes for Central in Hall Division 1. After being trounced by a strong Leys team, they managed their first win of the season against Loughborough Town seconds.

League Secretary's Report 20th November 2009

The Mens divisions produced some nail biting matches this week. The tightest involved Central and Leys in 3b. Both sides scored the same points, Chris Hall and Ashay Patel took a maximum for Leys, but Central ran out winners 5-4. In division 3a Huncote almost achieved their first win of the season against Leys. John Dilkes and Rob Euerby however swung the tie in Leys favour by posting a maximum. Simon Poynton and Ryan Gemmell remained unbeaten for Welland as they edged out Loughborough Tech in 5a. Enderby continue to dominate 5b. In Mens division 2 Longslade are on course for a return to the top flight after crushing Loughborough Town’s seconds; although Melton may have a say in that after Paul Gough and Paul Sanders returned a maximum at home to South.

Loughborough Student’s ladies squad opened their campaign with comfortable wins in the Ladies top divisions. South Leicestershire seconds overpowered the Leicester University ladies to challenge Loughborough Town at the top of division 3.

In the top Mixed division Loughborough Students look unstoppable inflicting huge defeats on their rivals. Division 2 however is much tighter. South narrowly beat Leys in a match where no couple could dominate, and Melton won all the close rubbers to sink Loughborough Town. Leicester University extend their lead in 4b with Zen just in touch.

Enderby maintain top spot in Hall division 2 with another convincing win, whilst Central seconds and thirds managed their first wins of the season. Glen are the clear leaders in division 3.

League Secretary's Report 13th November 2009

Loughborough Town opened their Men’s campaign in division 1 with a good win over Leys. Central take over top spot in division 3a and Leys seconds head division 3b. A fine maximum from Paul Alexander and Mike Willett for Loughborough Tech was not enough to prevent Mundella returning home with a useful away victory in division 5a. Birstall top division 5b thanks to a Pete Matthews/Bill Mee maximum at Harborough.

Town also won the first match in the Ladies top division in convincing style at Longslade. Division 2 is currently dominated by Longslade seconds and Loughborough seconds look strong in division 3.

To complete their good start to the season in the top divisions Town’s Mixed team then notched a fine away victory at South Leicestershire. Quorn continue to dominate division 4A of the Mixed league and Mundella edge into top spot in division 4b.

Existing champions Longslade look unstoppable in the Hall league top division and Enderby are on course for a return to that division after crushing Loughborough Town’s thirds.

League Secretary's Report 6th November 2009

Quorn are heading for the top of Mixed division 4A after a win at Glen, despite scoring less points than the home side. Jo Woodward and Giles Button were in fine form taking all three rubbers. South Leicestershire top both of the Mixed 3 divisions. A fine maximum from Emma Rumming and Ian Bosworth overcame a determined fight from the Leys in 3A. South’s fourth team will have to counter the challenge from the Leicester University in the return match to maintain their lead.

Melton secured their first win in Ladies division 2, with both Lynne Hume/Lisa Pycroft and Jane Roberts/Emma Sanders scoring maximums.

In Mens division 2 Loughborough kept Melton from taking top spot despite Paul Gough and Paul Sanders remaining unbeaten for the visitors. Zen have made a fine start to their season in Mens 5A and newcomers Harborough gained their first win at Phase Two.

In the Hall League division 2 Lakeside head for the top and Glen are dominating division 3.

League Secretary's Report 30th October 2009

Central Leicester opened their Mens division 3 campaign with an excellent win at South Leicester, Heath Hopewell and Paul Callow returning a maximum three rubbers for the visitors. In the same division a maximum from Leys John Dilkes and Rob Euerby was not enough to stop Melton edging a tight contest. In division 4 the Leicester University Students narrowly beat Leys with impressive performances from Matt Campsall and Jonathan Yeo. Showing the Students strength in depth, Leon Xu Xiaoming and Josh Wynn repeated the performance against Wyggeston.

In the top Mixed division current champions Loughborough Students look favourites to retain their title with two resounding opening victories. In division 2 Melton and Loughborough Leys have both started strongly. Another excellent display by Helene Maginess and Raj Rahul in division 3 could not save Wyggeston from defeat at the Leys. In division 4 Helen Yates and Girish Tailor starred in Glen’s  win, but Lisa and Jed Smith’s maximum for Zen could not stop visitors Mundella from snatching victory.

Mundella’s Jessica Meadows and Carman Ng were too strong for Central’s ladies, giving the visitors victory in Ladies division 2.

In the Hall league top division, Heather Warrington remained unbeaten as Loughborough Town seconds edged out newcomers Leys by the narrowest of margins.

League Secretary's Report 23rd October 2009

Melton edged out newly promoted Leicester University in a hard fought encounter in division 2 of the Men’s league. The Students fought back from a 3-0 deficit to fall just short of victory. Central’s single rubber win against Regal Arts in division 3 was equally hard fought with both teams scoring 10 games a piece.  Richard Song and Rashmi Chandarna posted a maximum in Loughborough Town’s win  at Loughborough Students. Town’s fifth team out fought the Tech with John Pilling and John Bhatwadekar also scoring a maximum in division 4. Lakeside, Mundella and Central all produced convincing wins in division 5.

Longslade’s seconds secured a useful win at home to Melton in division 2 of the Ladies league, Jane Cleaver and Debbie Merry remaining unbeaten for the home side. Equally impressive were Heather Warrington and Abie Frobisher in Loughborough Town seconds win in the opening match of division 3.

Match of the week in the Mixed league was Zen’s victory at Birstall in division 4. Almost all rubbers were settled by a couple of points either way. A maximum from Jenny Michael and Ken Sewell however could not stop Zen from taking the spoils. Lisa and Jed Smith were unbeaten in Zen’s home win against Central . A welcome return to action for Dave Watts, accompanied by Kate Fogg, helped Longslade to an away win at Loughborough Leys in division 3.

League Secretary's Report 3rd April 2009

It was always likely to be a close finish between Loughborough’s top mens  teams. A final match decider saw the Students narrowly beat Town for a second time to take the title. On this occasion Chris Raw and Gary Fox starred for the Students. In a double celebration the Student’s seconds also won a tightly contested division 2. Olympic improved their chances of survival in division 3 with a vital win at South, despite a maximum from Chris Farrin and Owen Ali for the home side. Tech head division 5 but have Mundella hot on their tails.

In the Ladies divisions, The Students confirmed their status as the league’s top ladies team, whilst Longslade look certain to top both divisions 2 and 3.

To complete a clean sweep of the top divisions the Students first Mixed team won division 1. South  completed a fine mixed season in division 2 with their first’s winning the title and their seconds as runners up.  Wendy Gent and Heath Hopewell helped to complete a fine season for Central in division 3a. The Leys won in emphatic style in divisions 3b and 4b.

League Secretary's Report 27th March 2009

One of the season’s most dominant displays of Mixed league badminton has come from South Leicestershire who have finished their season in division 2 averaging over eight rubbers per match. In division 4a Lakeside look firm favourites for the title following successive away wins. Even a Jo Woodward and Jason Tuckwood maximum couldn’t prevent them edging the result at Quorn. An impressive season is nearing the end for Leys thirds who have dominated 4b. Well done to division 5 winners Birstall who finished off in style.

Eight wins from eight matches is enough to give Longslade first team ladies the division 2 title and a return to badminton’s top flight.

In division 6 of the Mens league a strong Enderby side completed their season undefeated. In division 5b a Peter Matthews and Bill Mee maximum improved their club’s position. Division 4a leaders Longslade suffered a rare defeat at Uppingham with the home side’s Sherman Finnemore and Mark Burberry being undefeated.  The University take runners up spot in 4b. Central’s Edward Hayes and Greg Howes also returned a maximum as they out- fought Lougborough in 3a, whilst Melton handed a hiding to South.

League Secretary's Report 20th March 2009

South’s victory over the Leys hands the division 1 Ladies title to Loughborough Students, who win with two matches to spare.  In division 2 Mundella  pushed Loughborough’s second string into the relegation spot despite a maximum from the vistor’s  Carol Harding and Heather Warrington.

One of the season’s closest contests is in Mens division 2 where no less than 4 teams can still take the title. Quorn climb from the bottom of division 4a with a double over Lakeside- Steve Jefferies and Giles Button remaining unbeaten throughout.

With their first team already assured of the Mixed division 2 title, South’s seconds move into the runners up spot by beating relegated Melton seconds. With their victory at Mundella , Central take the division 3a title leaving the home side at the bottom. Zen improved their chances of survival in division 4b with a narrow win at Lakeside – the home side’s maximum from  Jenny Maycock and Ricky Smith not quite enough to give them victory.

League Secretary's Report 6th March 2009

Loughborough Student’s ladies are now within one win of claiming the division 1 title. South almost halted their winning streak, but Sam Andrews and Kelly Blake proved too strong for the visitors. Student’s seconds lost the battle at the top of division 2 leaving Longslade close to promotion.

The first title in the Mens league has been claimed by Loughborough Town’s fifth team, winning division 5b at a canter. The Student’s Mens prepare for their forthcoming battle with Loughborough Town in division 1 by defeating Regal Arts. Some consolation for the Arts as Steve Higgins and Andy Frye posted a maximum. The same clubs lined up for the title challenge in division 2 – the Students getting the better of Town to go top. Ian Hampshire and Chris Taylor helped Glen to a close victory in division 4b and Phase 2 improve their position in division 6.

It looks a similar story in Mixed division 1 as Loughborough’s two top sides, the Town and the Students, contest the title. South Leicestershire remain unbeaten in division 2 and look clear favourites for honours. Only an unlikely series of results will now prevent Central Leicester from claiming the division 3a title - Lesley and Greg Howes  scoring a maximum for the visitors against South. In division 3b Carole Spencer and Neil Hoult performed likewise leaving Leys clear leaders.

League Secretary's Report 27th February 2009

Zen maintained their outside chance of promotion from Mens division 5a with an excellent away win at Lakeside.  Carl Herbert and Jed Smith were in dominant form for the away side. In division 4b Wyggeston won the battle of the relegation candidates with a convincing win over Leys.  Loughborough’s win in 3b keep them in contention, whilst Central ‘s  Shani Paik and Nasar Farooq returned a maximum in their win over Melton in 3a.

Heavy defeats for Enderby in Mixed division 2 push them ever close to relegation.  Longslade improve their position in division 3a, Jan Thompson and Jeff Hill scoring a maximum over South. In division 5a Wanlip inflicted the first defeat on Birstall. Sandra Webster and Mark Cockayne were undefeated for the home side.

The only title yet to be claimed in the Hall League is for division 2. Quorn’s win over Central maintained their slender advantage over Leys.

League Secretary's Report 6th February 2009

Congratulations to Longslade and Lakeside. They are the first teams to claim titles after their latest wins in divisions 1 and 3 respectively of the Hall league. Cathy Buckler and Lee Frith for the Longslade team and Debbie Dy for Lakeside were unbeaten.

New leaders in Mens division 3a are Longslade  after back to back wins. Loughborough appear to be their only obstacle in winning the title. In division 4a a maximum three rubbers from Dave Dobson and Steve Dovey  helped Lakeside edge out Uppingham, leaving the away side the consolation of winning more games and points than their hosts. In the adjacent division Glencote move convincingly away from the bottom. Mundella take top spot in 5a but the Tech keep up the pressure with Imran and Manuf Dewan leading the way in their win at Welland. Hoton surprised the Tech’s second string leaving Enderby a clear run at the division 6 title.

The Leys gave themselves an outside chance of the division 1 mixed title after Chelsey White and Richard Grant scored a maximum  in their win over Longslade. Leys third team are almost passed the post in division 4b.

Loughborough Leys ladies closed in on the division 1 leaders with a whitewash of Melton.

League Secretary's Report 16th January 2009

Loughborough Town’s fixture against Central in Mens division 3a resulted in the County’s highest scoring match since the rally point system was introduced.  A massive 945 points were contested, with the performance of Chris Wardle and Elliot Shulver turning the match in favour of the home side.  Glen surprised leaders Huncote in division 4b by inflicting their first defeat of the season. Ian Hampshire and Girish Tailor’s maximum securing Glen’s win. Jed Smith partnering Carl Herbert and Ken Sewell alongside Andy Page were instrumental in Zen and Birstall respectively securing narrow wins in division 5.

Lakeside move a step closer to the title in Ladies division 3. Not even a maximum from Upping ham’s Sian Bryars and Marian Ward could halt their unbeaten run. In division 2 Central won the battle of the relegation candidates despite a three rubber contribution from Loughborough’s Carol Harding and Heather Warrington.

Loughborough Town remain on course for a showdown with the Students later in the season, by gaining a narrow win at neighbours Leys in Mixed division 1. Town’s Kerry Riley and James White recorded comfortable wins.  Melton takeover second spot in division 2 by edging Town’s second team, in a match where the visitors notched more games and points than their winning hosts.

Current League Leaders 9th January 2009

With Loughborough at the heart of Leicestershire badminton it is no surprise to see their local teams performing so well as we near the half way point of the season. Elsewhere, Lakeside must be pleased with their record to date.

In the Mens league Huncote show that even the smaller clubs can be successful. As do Quorn in the Hall league.

South Leicestershire, Central Leicester and Birstall have all returned impressive results so far in the Mixed league.

League Secretary's Report 2nd January 2009

Amie Hoult and Chelsey White scored a maximum for Leys preventing South Leicestershire from taking top spot in Ladies division 1. This goes to the Students with a convincing away win at lowly Melton.

Contrasting fortunes for Leys Men who remain bottom of division 1 despite a gallant effort at Longslade, Lee Frith and Carl Jennings form for the home side proving decisive. In division 5 Carl Herbert and Jed Smith’s maximum was not enough to stop Lakeside hauling themselves away from the bottom.

With five straight victories, another win for Lakeside in Division 3 of the Hall league should be enough to secure them the title.

League Secretary's Report 26th December 2008

In a remarkable week’s badminton every Ladies division result finished 5-4. Lisa Pycroft and Julie Roberts almost brought Melton their first win of the season in the top division with a fine maximum. Likewise Mundella’s Rakee Jethwa and Joanne Deacon pushed the Leys all the way. Yet again, in division 3, Leicester University’s Ruth Richards and Servinna Li could not stop Lakeside from taking top spot.

Loughborough Town first squad now lead Mens division 1 with an excellent display at Longslade, whilst their seconds were involved in the closest match to date against the Students; Sanjay Pattni and Avinash Chandarana producing a maximum in a match with an overall score difference of one point. With Town’s thirds now heading division 3 could all 5 men’s teams win their divisions this season?

Leicester University closed the gap on leaders Leys in Mixed division 3; Ruth Richards maximum with Chris Welch proving successful on this occasion.

Loughborough Town’s dominance has also spread to the Hall League with their first squad recording convincing wins to take them to top spot.

League Secretary's Report 19th December 2008

South Leicestershire and Loughborough Students head Ladies division 1, both producing convincing displays this week. In division 2 Students Sarah Lloyd and Anna Rudge scored a maximum in their win against neighbours Loughborough Town.

South Leicestershire are the only unbeaten side in Mens division 3a, boosted by the current form of both Chris Viney and David Forryan in their back to back wins. In division 4b Huncote consolidate their position as leaders, as do Enderby in division 6.

In the top division of the Mixed a maximum from Carl Jennings and Emily Broderick was not enough to stop the Students from securing a vital away victory. The Students now have a clear lead over their rivals. Debbie Dy and Matt Matharu helped Lakeside consolidate their top spot in division 4a by remaining undefeated against Glen.

Longslade maintain a narrow lead in division 1 of the Hall League.

League Secretary's Report 12th December 2008

Loughborough crushed opponents Longslade seconds to remain unbeaten in the Mixed top division. Their meeting later in the season with the Students may well decide the outcome of this title. Hayley Deas and Brian Smith’s maximum consolidated South’s position as leaders of division 2, whilst Enderby are finding it hard going with both Melton teams inflicting defeats. The week’s closest match saw South’s third team pair of Ian Bosworth and Emma Rumming score a maximum to edge Mundella in division 3.

In Mens division 2 Loughborough Town seconds close in on current leaders, Students seconds, by convincingly beating the Students thirds. Leys reversed the previous week’s result against Central in division 3, with Andy Lipman and Chris Hall tipping the scales in a tight match. A similar performance in division 4 by Longslade’s Bob Smart and Jeff Hill secured a useful way win over Regal’s seconds. Central thirds got off the mark in division 5 and Loughborough Tech seconds notched back to back wins in division 6.

Longslade take top spot in Ladies division 2 with two convincing home wins.

League Secretary's Report 14th November 2008

WHERE ARE THE GIRLS?

A quiet week for the Ladies saw Central notch their first win of the season.

In division 3 Ashby have been forced through lack of numbers to withdraw their ladies team.  After many years in the local league this is a rather sad reflection on ladies badminton in Leicestershire, where numbers have been in serious decline for some years. There is now less than half the number of ladies divisions compared to the men’s divisions.

A maximum 3 rubbers by Loughborough Leys Mens pairing Dilkes & Hoult was not enough to stop South Leics from gaining a hard fought away win in division 3. In the same division, Olympic’s Ghelani & Patel’s maximum saw off the brave challenge of Central Leicester.

In Mens division 5 Birstall’s Mee & Matthews  were top scorers, but were pipped by hosts Millennium.
The higher Mixed divisions saw the strong Loughborough Students and South Leics sides both record convincing wins. In the lower divisions Quorn’s Tuckwood & Godfrey were on form to edge the Croakers on their home patch.

League Secretary's Report 9th November 2008

MAXIMUMS NOT ENOUGH

In Ladies division 2 a maximum 3 rubbers from Loughborough Leys pair Stanley & Turner was not enough to stop neighbours Loughborough Town from securing a narrow home win.

Likewise in Mixed division 3 a similar performance from Ashby's Cripwell and Gillatt failed to halt Central Leicester's impressive start to the season. The latest battle of the mixed division 1 giants saw Loughborough Town edge Loughborough Leys 5 to 4.

In the Mens section Loughborough Tech continue their fine sequence of wins. Another Loughborough battle resulted in the Students inflicting a heavy defeat upon the Leys.
